Water Lily roots

Question
This is my first pond so I am a true novice. All seems to be well except my water lily keeps comin gout of the soil and floats. The plant seems to be healthy, new leaves and flowers are produced often. But the plant bulb has no roots to hold it in the soil. I have had the pond (100gal) and plant since June of this year. I do have fish, kio and goldfish.

Answer
Hi Pat,
Thanx for your question.  Fine a pot that drains that is large enough to comfortably accommodate the rhizome of your water lily.  Place a little bit of  soil in the bottom of the pot and then the rhizome on top and then cover with soil up to about 3 inches below the top of the pot.  Then get some small river pebbles, the pebbles preferable should be peasized and put a 2inch layer on top of the soil.  This will help anchor the rhizome and keep it inside the pot.  Now, when you are lowering the pot into the water, set it in a shallow area where the soil can absorb water and get waterlogged.  This will also help in keep the rhizome and soil from coming back out.  If you have fish that keep pulling at the plant and rooting in the soil you can buy some plastic netting to put around the top of the pot that will discourage the fish from digging in the pot.  After, the soil has gotten waterlogged, slowly lower the pot into the water and make sure it settles lightly at the bottom.  I hope this helps.
