carbon in pond & water lilies

Question
Hi Tom,
I have 2 questions actually. I live in So. California. I have a 2000 gallon koi pond that is covered about 75% by a redwood trellis. When it rains I get red colored water from the trellis. Although I've been concerned about the effects it might have on the fish......it doesn't seem to effect anyone but me. I just don't like the look. Today I added a very fine activated charcoal that I rinsed and rinsed prior to putting it in. It's in a fine mesh bag. The water has now turned  black anyway. How long will that take to clear? (assuming it does). Also, how much charcoal would have been the right amount to put in my pond?

One final question. I have had lilies and I love them however they take such a hit when I add salt in the spring. Can you suggest what type of lily and other plants that are least effected by salt and where I might get them?

Thanks, Donna

Answer
Hi Donna,
Thanx for your question.  May I ask why you were adding carbon to the pond?  It should only take a couple of days for the pond to clear.  Was there some sort of chemical imbalance in your pond?  I have never used charcoal, never needed it so you would have to tell me why you put it in the pond in the first place.  The second question is why do you add salt to your pond?  From where does your water come?  Most freshwater plants are not going to like too much salt in the pond.  I'm sorry it took so long to get back to you.  I forgot to put myself on vacation when I was out of town.
I hope to hear from you.
Tom
