simple questions

Hi Brigitte I just have a few simple routine questions about pond setups.

First off the only fish you can put in a pond is goldfish and koi right? Not enough oxygen circulates for regular tropical fish as well as it may be too cold.

Another thing during the Winter even with a heater would the fish be able to survive, I guess it would depend on where you live as well. But a general answer would be helpful.

In general, regular comet shaped Goldfish and Koi are best for Garden Ponds. They can survive in the winter all the way up into Canada if the Pond is built correctly and prepared for winter adequately.
Golden Orfe, a bit hard to find, can do well also - but like Koi - they need at least a Pond of 1200 - 1500 gallons to thrive.
As far as heaters for the winter...they do not really heat the water (although those are available, if you want to spend a LOT of money). Instead, they turn on when the surface of the pond starts to freeze and keep a hole open in the ice for oxygen to enter and carbon monoxide to escape - this helping to keep your fish alive. A pond with Koi and/or Golden Orfe should also have a pond air pump to provide sufficient oxygen.
