Water Lily pads are looking skeletal

Question
Our pond is approx. 500 gallons.  There are no fish in it, yet this year.  The lily pads are getting eaten up and only the veins are visible.  Something I read said it is probably snails or larvae.  Can you tell me what it is and how to get rid of it?  We haven't had this problem in 6 years.  Thank you.

Answer
It is definitely a pest with a chewing mouthpart, most likely aphids or mites.  The solution depends on exactly what it is.  You should be able to see tiny dot-like insects, perhaps red in color.  Hot sauce diluted with water typically takes care of aphids without harming most plants.
