salt in the freshwater tank

Question
I am getting back into the hobby after a absence of 30 some years. Things have really changed!

I am in the process of setting up a 55 gal that will be a community tank.

I have heard that I should put in a little salt. Is this true? And if so how much?

Also any tip on unusual community fish I could get.

Answer
Robert,

Salt is more harmful than helpful unless you are raising brackish fish like Mollies, exclusively.  I am pretty much a traditionalist so I can't help you with "unusual" community fish.  I suggest you check out some web sites or buy one of the more recent books that speak to the subject.  Amazon.com has lots of them.  Good luck to you.
