Question
I have had one black convict for a long time. Just put in a new one Sunday today is Tuesday and there are eggs in the tank, the older one is very protective of this area. I read that there is a three day period between eggs and hatchlings, is this true? And is this common?

Answer
Hi Charles,
Yes, it takes about three days for the eggs to hatch. This depends somewhat on temperature.  At really warm temperatures it can take half a day less and at cold temperatures (e.g., near 70oF), it might take up to five days for them to hatch. This is actually something that we do extensive research on in my lab.

Is it common: I have seen it happen.  Clearly your fish was waiting and ready to go as was the new one.
