Need some advice on a problem.

Question
I have two horses, and problems with both. My oldest is a 2 year old belgian draft horse, he weighs about 2,000 lbs. I cannot get a ferrier out to work with him, and in order for me to trim his hooves, I have to have the vet sedate him. Well, that isn't working either, and his hooves are in really bad shape. Can you give any hints or tips in regards to getting him to behave enough to trim his hooves?
And the second problem. I just bought a 1 year old paint stallion. He wasn't taken care of very well, he is underweight and I am concerned about his right back There is a large lump at the top of the hoof where it meets the rest of his leg, and I really don't know what it is or what they could have done that would have caused it. Can you think of anything it could be? It doesn't bother him when he is walking.
I appreciate your help.
Thanks,
Heather

Answer
Hi Heather. I wish I could solve your problems, but all I can do is offer advice. First, with your Belgian, I would strongly suggest ground training. Usually when a horse has issues with his feet he also has issues with manners. If you know of anyone who is a "good trainer" he or she will help you immensely. If you know of no one then there are a multitude of training videos availabe at very reasonable prices. To name a few, Clinton Anderson, John Lyons and Craig Cameron.
Now to your paint. It is very difficult if not impossible to diagnose a problem without seeing the horse. My suggestion would be to have the foot xrayed. I will assume that it is an injury and may heal after some time. But to be safe, radiographs are invaluable.
I wish you the best of luck.
