What kind of turtle and what kind of care?

Question
Hi Mark I have two questions. The first one is if you can tell me the kind of turle that I have.  I will try to describe her/him/it as completely as I can.  She is about 6 inches in diameter.  She has a serrated shell, the ridges are black.  My husband said that she will be big enough for a small child to ride on when she is full grown (hopefully not in my lifetime).  She does not seem to need water.  She does not burrow (although I wonder if she is feeling porrly and that is why).  We had two turles, the other was definately a box turtle.  It burrowed and was much more active than this one. I am very concerned about her.  She has been alone for two months, she eats well.  But she stays in one corner of the pen and she doesn't move around except to eat.  She doesn't take advantage of the burrowing holes.  She gets very messy in the corner, she sits in her own feces and so we clean her with warm water and I try to keep the corner clean everyday.  But I am concerned that she isn't well.  I am not asking you to diagnose her.  I am just wondering what kind of turtle she seems to be and if I taking care of her wrong. Maybe I am not properly feeding her or her needs are completely different than the other turlte we used to have.  There are no markings on her head, her color is tan.  I hope I gave you adequate information  Unfortunately I have inherited this turtle and I am very uninformed on how to take care of a reptile.  Thank you!  Shannon

Answer
From the information you provided, I cannot make a solid ID- there are a lot of turtles that meet those basic standards, although I am curious to know how your husband knows the adult size if he does not know the species?

I'm going to guess 'Asian Leaf Turtle', which is a term that covers a variety of species some of which are moderately common in the pet trade.

For a rather long list of pictures to wade through, try this site: http://www.chelonia.org/byspecies.htm

For just the Asian Leaf turtles, look for 'Cyclemys' in the list.

Besides www.chelonia.org, also try the www.tortoise.org website.

Good luck! If this does not help, give me more of a description- back and belly patterns, head and neck patterns to start, although it may require 'scute counts' to solve!
