Question
My brother brought me home a baby turtle that he found on his work site(very sandy) yesterday.  He found it with four others while he(my Brother) was digging.  The baby is about the size of a silver dollar and though I have wanted one for while now I must confess to having no knowledge of how to care for him.  I had planned on doing research before obtaining one from a pet shop.  I'm not even sure what kind of turtle he is. I think that he is a box turtle. He has black(or very dark green) and yellowish horizontal stripes on his head and neck. His shell is very round and dark green with relatively square tiles in the center and a single row of smaller squares going all the way around the outer edge.  The underside of his shell is also yellow. If he is a box turtle then I have a relatively good idea of how to make a suitable living area for him but as he is so small I am at a loss as to the food and water aspect of caring for him.  not only the what but also how to give it to him. Please, can you help me?  I want to do right by him, and deperately don't want him to die. Thank you so much for your speedy reply.

Very Sincerely,
Rita Robinson

Answer
1.) It is possible that this turtle was hibernating or partially hibernating. You should be aware that this will nake  it harder to care for- strike one.

2.) Baby turtles are tough for beginners to raise. Strike two. Wild caught turtles do not make great pets- they get very stressed in captivity. Strike three.

3.) It does not sound like a baby box turtle to me- photo here: http://www.austinsturtlepage.com/world_of_turtles/3-Toed_Box_Turtles_-_Terrapene...
It sounds more like a Yellow-belly slider: http://www.austinsturtlepage.com/world_of_turtles/Yellow-bellied_Sliders_-_Trach...

If neither of these looks like yours, you can try this link for several other photos: http://www.austinsturtlepage.com/world_of_turtles/

Personally, I'd release it. If it awakens an interest in keeping turtles for you, then that gives you time to research, make a good habitat, and buy a captive bred turtle that would make a good pet for many, many years.

A good research site for turtles in general is http://www.austinsturtlepage.com
