Red eared sliders in regards to water plants

Question
I am currently thinking about getting a red eared slider for my pond.  I asked a guy on here by the name of mick about the fish but was wandering about the plants.  I have three plants in the pond: water canna, duck weed and water iris.  I was wondering if they would eat the roots of the plants and kill them.  I have done some research on the matter and found it would probably eat the leaves but wasnt sure about the roots.  I did some research on the fish and now im not particularly worried about the fish but was wondering about the plants.  thanks for the attention to my question.

Answer
They will tend to focus on the nutrient-rich leaves.

Now- Sliders are BIG turtles, I wonder if you might be happier with the smaller and generally better (in my opinion) Painted Turtle? You may want to look at some other options.
