illness in horsefield tortoise

Question
I bought 2 horsefield tortoises yesterday, and while one seems completely happy and normal, the other is constantly opening it's mouth wide as if yawning, and bubbles are occasionally coming from it's nose. Is this anything to be worried about? And is there anything i can do?

Answer
The bubbling is usually a sign of a Respiratory Infection (RI). RI is a real problem in tortoises- even with a vet's care it is often fatal. It may seem like a simple cold, but it affects tortoises more like pneumonia.

Russians should be checked by a vet anyway- they are often loaded with parasites that will cause problems and a fairly small investment in medical care at this point will pay off in the long run.
