There is a myth that the turtle will die. This is not really true.

The turtle does not like it, and it is harder for it to breathe, but it can usually get back over on its own.

If it cannot for some reason, it will eventually die from thirst, starvation, stress, etc. If it is in the open, it may die from exposure or heat stroke.
