my sick box turtle

Question
My husband has had our box turtle for close to 20 years, and recently we gave her away.  The people had her for a few months and asked if we would take her back, so we did.  When we got her back she seemed fine, she was eating and seemed pretty normal.  We have had her for about 2 weeks now and she has stopped eating and her ear is big.  It looks like it is going to pop.  I am very worried about her.  I live in an area where the vets all around her don't treat turtles.  Oh and she even puked.  We have never seen that before.  Help us if you can!

Answer
Marie,

The ear mass needs to be removed by a veterinarian.  The good news is that any vet can do it (I'm assuming you live in the US?)  they simply remove the mass, clean the ear, and maybe put the turtle on antibiotics (I don't remember whether or not this is done routinely).

Call for an appointment.  As long as you tell them what the problem is they should have no problem treating the turtle.  It's when the vets have to do diagnostics that they get nervous.  Let them know that the turtle just needs an ear abcessed removed - no hospitalization should be required.  If you sound confident and calm they should take the turtle.  Vets are just like human doctors in the fact that as long as they don't feel like you are going to sue them they will try to help you.  They need to know that they have your trust and confidence.

Here is a link for more information.  If you'd like print it out and take it to the vet

You are very lucky to have your turtle back.  If you'd like to write me knowing why she was given away I may be able to help you keep her... box turtles are exotic animals and it can be difficult finding a competent owner.
