red eared slider problems

Question
Someone gave us a turtle about 5 years ago and we really didn't know what we were getting into.  We love our turtle, but for some time have been feeling like we increasingly can't accomodate his needs.  I have all the equipment that you are supposed to have.  I have an (expensive) and heavy duty filter, but still the water just won't stay clean any time.  And he is getting so big I dont' think our 40 gallon tank is big enough.  I have two questions:  1.  is it possible to have an outdoor habitat for a red-eared slider that is safe and lower maintainance than indoor tanks.  2.  are there any organizations that take red-eared sliders into good, healthy situations. I don't want to sell him, but I would be open to a good home with a habitat that can accomodate him long term.

Answer
Hi Marcia,

Depending on where you live an outdoor pond might not be the ideal setup for a red eared slider. You can try different zoo's in your area that might take them.

As far as the water not staying clean you may be over feeding him. Have you tried live minnows or goldfish? Also putting some very small snails in the water will help tremendously. Does your underwater filter have carbon in it? If you are feeding him pellets be careful not to throw too much in the tank at one time. The pellets that he doesn't get to in time will separate in the water and cause a nasty tank.

I hope this helps.
