Lighting for Red Eared Sliders

Question
QUESTION: Hello! I have 2 red eared slider babes ... approx. 4 inches &3 1/2 inches who I just moved into a 40 gallon JEBO R375 tank. It comes with 2 bulbs and wondering if one or both is useful. The bulbs are a 55w blue and a FSL 6400K 55w. They seemed to react to the blue lighting - their throats going nuts and hard to know if it is a good thing or not. I have the tank about half way full with basking dock and floating options. I also have a basking lamp in a reflective clamp above the dock. Normally, you could turn one or the other lamps on - or both .... But for some reason the lighting is not working unless both switches are on. Is that light concentration too much? And if the blue lighting is not good for them - can you recommend lighting in its place? Many thanks in advance for LuLu, Lola and I!!!~  :-)

ANSWER: Hello RES aka red ear sliders require Uvb and heat, water warm. The lights that generally come with 40 gallon JEBO R375 tank are for reef tanks. Id recommend NOT using these.
RES are happy with a basking area with a dome light, that sends or generates the heat to one area and the uvb can cover the top of the tank they need it but then a cooler area. The lighting that comes with your set up as far as i can tell is for salt water not for turtles or fresh water living species.
I would recommend not using these, get your dome or find long bulbs for fresh water and or a uvb bulb that will fit.
the depth of the water should be 3 times as long as the turtles or more so that sounds correct, and just use your dome.

QUESTION: Can you please recommend the correct ulb wattage for the fresh water bulb and the uvb bulb given the tank size, etc.? Also, I have the water at a constant 80 degrees - is that ideal? And is there a filter set-up that you can recommend for this as well? I have a repto filter (90 gallons an hour) that is probably not effective at this point).  With Gratitude!!!~ :-)  Kim

Answer
Kim I am so sorry that it took me so long to get back to you as i did not see the question.

To answer it though-
I tell people to stay away from the swirley type bulbs as they have been linked to temp blindness in reptuiles it is under investigation now. Zoo med is a great bulb 5.0 is ok.
I prefer to get the Mercury Vapor bulbs. They are more expensive however they last longer and cover bigger area.

Water temps look good, you can even increase up to 90 in the heat areas also known as basking area.
Filter will be fine until they get bigger. 90 gal an hour will filtrate the size area youre doing very efficent and they will be happy.
