Redfoot Tortoise and noise

Question
I just bought 2 Redfoot hatchlings that will be shipped to me next week but want to know if noise bothers them (tv, kids, voices) so I can decide where to place the bin.  Also, for their drinking/bathing water, can I just use tap water? or should I use filtered, bottled, or something more pure like reverse osmosis water?

Answer
Hi Daniela,

They do have pretty good hearing, but they typically adjust well to noise and commotion.  If you wanted to set them up in a main room it should be fine as long as the bin doesn't get banged into or anything like that.  If you have dogs, you definitely want to make sure there is no access to the tortoises as dogs pose a huge danger, especially to hatchlings.  I have my redfoot juveniles in a separate room, but that's because I have cats and a dog and keep a room especially for my reptiles.

You can use regular tap water as long as it isn't overly chlorinated.  If it is, I'd use filtered water.  I have well water here, but I've also used tap water in the past and my tortoises have been fine with it.

Enjoy your hatchlings!  Redfoots are beautiful tortoises.
