Question
A female yellow-bellied slider laid a clutch of eggs very close to our house on the river.  Although I have found some info regarding the incubation period, I haven't seen anything regarding whether the eggs generally hatch at night or duriing the day and whether the hatchlings can be distracted by bright lights on the surrounding homes at night.  I know that this is true of sea turtles hatchlings.  Can you answer either of these questions?  We don't want to do anything to distract the hatchlings from making it to the river.  Thank you!

Answer
The babies will hatch whenever they are ready. This could be day or night. They will likely remain nearby or just under the surface until they are ready to move out. This will generally not be during the hottest parts of the day. They may be distracted by lights, but they will have a stronger urge to tend toward the water. Sea turtles get distracted because they are looking for the moon.
