Something like egg shells

Question
One day I discovered these white broken egg shell-like pieces floating around in my turtles tank. We have two turtles, but I don't think those are their eggs because my sister told us that turtles' eggs shells are hard and the pieces are kind of soft and balloon-like. This happened for another 2 times and now I'm getting really worried because I'm afriad that it's sick. Please help me!

Answer
Cynthia,  First lets sex your turtles and make sure they are a mating pair.I am sure you already know the males tend to have long slender tails and long front nails and of course your female has short stubby tails and short nails.....It may be eggs...this is not uncommon. Breeding is abit of a time consuming thing. You would need a nice spot with about 5 or six inches of sand and temp changes. If you decide to go that way let me know. In the meantime I am sure its not a fungus since this has happened twice before and probably will keep happening. I know a mess to clean out. I would definitely check you PH. If your to acidic your shells will stay soft and if they are not buried they will also stay soft and balloon like. So unfortunately your prob gonna deal with this again and again. If you see no physical changes such as puffy eyes or worms don't worry its just nature. If you have any other questions please get back to me. Good Luck,Tina
