Box turtle in Mississippi

Question
I found a box turtle on the road that has been run over. the shell appears to be ok and the turtles front legs and head appear to also be fine. The back legs must have been out at the time of the accident and it appears that both hind limbs have been crushed and partly amputated at what i would call the ankle. I have put the turtle in an inclosure and it has made several trips around it. the bleeding appears to have stopped from the back legs . can i do anything to help this turtle? My daughter has fallen in love with it and wants daddy to make it all better.

Answer
Hi Brad,

The turtle needs to have its injuries treated by a qualified herp vet.  This isn't something you can do at home.  I suggest you contact a wildlife rehabber in your area for help.  Keep in mind that box turtles may be protected by state law, in which case it would not be legal for you to keep it.  Many states are now very protective of native turtles because wild populations have been so decimated by collection for the pet trade, etc.  If you need help finding a rehabber, please post back with your city and I'll do what I can to help.  In the meantime, keep the turtle clean and try not to handle it so it's not too stressed.
