Question
Dear Katie,
I am writing a book and need to know how many hours of sleep per day rabbits need. I also need to know which species of rabbit is the most cammonly uased as a pet.
Cordially, Scott

Answer
Hi Scott,
Rabbits only sleep for as long as they want to, and this depends on the rabbit. Most rabbits sleep when there is no one around, so this could be late at night, early morning and when owners are at work, school etc. So rarely would you see your rabbit asleep. Most rabbits probably sleep about 6-8 hours a day but this is only an estimate.
All breeds of rabbit are kept as pets, ranging from the tiny netherland dwarf to the huge british giant, in England (where I am) probably most common is the mini lop and dwarf lop, both docile and friendly breeds. But it depends on the owner, for example a small child may keep a netherland dwarf for its size and placid nature but an adult may keep a french lop in place of a dog or cat as these giants folow owners around and can be kept as house pets as are easily litter trained.
Good Luck with your book - I hope my information helps.
Katie
