rabbit dandruff

i was wondering if you could tell me why my rabbit has dandruff and flaky skin on part of his back. is there some sort of medication i can buy from my local pet shop?

Dear Sophie,

In most cases, this type of flaking is caused by fur mites (Cheletiella sp.) and can be safely and effectively treated with Revolution (selamectin) from your veterinarian.  I would NOT use anything from a pet store, even if it has a rabbit on the label.  A lot of the products sold over the counter are not only not truly effective against mites, but also may not be completely safe for rabbits.
