Question
How long would it before a male can reproduce?
I have a mum rabbit with 2 babiesof 4 months
One is male.
How long can they safely be left together?
I found fur (lots)along one wall in the nest
box this morning.
I am in New Zealand & its the beginning of
winter. Could mum just be trying to keep them
warm?
AnswerAt four months, your male could be fertile. I never leave mine together past 8 - 10 weeks.
That being true, your mother doe or one of his siblings may be bred and is preparing a nest. It is unusual for a doe to pull more fur after the litter is born and especially when they are that old.
I would remove the buck NOW and try to determine who is the expectant mother (I suspect it is probably the mother of the current litter since the others are so young, but it isn't impossible for them to be bred as well). I would separate the others as well and give them each a box to build a new nest. Nest building is usually followed by the birth by only a few days.
