Various Rabbit Concerns

Question
This is a bit long, but I have had a rabbit since the end of March.
Last week I had to take him to the vet because he wasn't breathing right. He was breathing too fast, and it was extremely hot in my apartment. I tried to keep him as cool as possible and got a window fan, ran other fans around him, put ice on his ears and used frozen vinegar bottles near him to try to keep him cool, but he still kept panting.
I took him to the vet (they don't really know much about rabbits and when I called them, one time adviced me to feed him pellets 85% of the time, which I know isn't right because I did my research before I got him.) they said he had a cold, gave him baytril, vitamins, and they injected a solution into him to get him hydrated, charged me quite a bit of money and sent me home.
I have been giving him the pills concealed in a banana slice for several days.(I tried banana babyfood yesterday, he would not touch it as soon as the medicine was crushed into it, so I had to put it on his feet for him to lick off.) This morning I noticed a pool of what looked like diarreia sticking to his rear. It smelled unpleasent.
He often lays around in his litter box though, and had spent most of the morning in it.
There are several problems-
For some reason he has stopped drinking out of his water bottle.
He can't have diarreia because I feed him 3 types of high fiber hay (timothy, mountain grass, oat hay) plus high fiber oxbow pellets and fresh leafy vegetables every day.
I have a 10 pound bag of pellets that couldn't have gone bad yet because I keep half in the fridge, the other half in the freeze and I just got it at the beginning of the month.
Could feeding him too much banana to make him take his Baytril be the problem? I try to limit how much sugar he gets a day, but i've had to give him too many slices of banana if he doesn't finish the slice with the pill on it.
Could I be feeding him too many green vegetables? Someone I talked to said that a rabbit will drink less water if he can get the water from the vegetables and then balance it all out by eating hay. I add extra water to his vegetable bowl and he will sometimes sip out of that.
He is not lethargic, except when he is resting in the middle of the day. This morning and last night he was running all over the house at top speed and he ate the hay I offered him earlier, devoured it in fact.
Should I be concerned?

Answer
Dear Shondolyn,

I think it's definitely a good idea for you to find a vet who is more experienced with rabbits.  If this is a baby bunny, it's expected for him to have a relatively rapid respiration rate, especially if he's active.

You can find a more experienced rabbit vet here:

If the temperature is higher than about 78, then he needs to be in air conditioning, and frozen bottles are the next best thing.

The runny stool could be a response to stress and/or medication, and I think it would be a good idea for you to read the following to get the full rundown on this condition, cecal dysbiosis, which can be very serious in rabbits:

I hope this helps get you started.  Please write back if you have any other questions.
