My neatered doe

Question
Hello
I have a year old doe who had a litter of kittens in Febuary and I was afraid afterwoods that she may get womb cancer late in life so I had her neatured but now she seems to be getting rather over weight. I feed her a good rabbit food and she has plenty of good hay and she has vegtables three times a week so I do monitor what she eats and she is lead trained and has a large run and gets daily exercise but she just seems to be getting bigger. Is it because I had her neatured?. Thank you for taking time to answer my questions.

Answer
Well, I might check the quantities she is getting.  There's a diet FAQ at http://www.rabbit.org/faq/sections/diet.html that lists quantities by age group.

Rabbits do not gain weight just because they are neutered.  The weight gain is due to a different issue.

You might cut out or cut down on sugarly vegetables, if you are feeding alfalfa hay go to coastal or timothy or another grass hay, and cut back on the pellets.

Also watch out for treats.  Almost all rabbit treats sold in pet stores are very high in sugar and aren't really good for them.
