Question
i have 3 rabbits, 2 rex's (1 male & 1 female) and 1 unknown breed doe. the unknown doe and rex male had their first litter 4 weeks ago & all babies are doing fine and healthy. the rex doe and male had their 2nd litter last sunday and after having just over 1 week the baby died. i had some friends looking after them while i went on holiday & they have been back home for 2 days. i found the dead baby this morning. (her first litter of 3 died) my question/s are
1. would  the move likely have caused the death, where as the mom wouldnt feed her anymore?
2. why is she having small litters? 1 & 3? i thought they were meant to have more?

Answer
Dear Danni,

Without an autopsy, there is absolutely no way to know why the baby died.  However, if the mama gave birth only four weeks ago, she is not ready to nurse another litter, as it takes a full 8 weeks of mother's milk for a baby rabbit to be weaned.  Please read this for complete information on this very important topic:

If these litters are her first, they are expected to be smaller.  However, she is being stressed by having too many litters too close together, and perhaps by other factors of which I am unaware.  Any of these can cause small litter size.

I hope this helps. Please write back if you have any other questions.
