Rabbit bald spots

Question
I have a year and a half old male neutered rabbit. He recently started a regular molting phase but this time he started to have blad spots. He has never had a molting before where the skin was exposed. There is also a lot of dandruff in these areas. How should I treat this so he can start growing the hair back and the dry skin can go away?

Answer
Dear Sarah,

Bald spots plus flakes usually = fur mites (Cheyletiella sp.).  Fortunately, these are easily and effectively treated with Revolution (selamectin) from your vet, which is MUCH more effective than the older, injectible drug, ivermectin--at least for fur mites.  You can read more about this here:

www.bio.miami.edu/hare/furloss.html

and find a vet who is experienced with rabbits here:

I hope this helps.  Please write back if you have any other questions.
