Rabbits and ear mites

Question
Hi Dr. Krempels!

I have two two year old bunnies(Chip and Pretzel), both fixed, who live with me in my apartment.  Three days ago I adopted a kitten from the Humane Society.  He had minimal contact with the rabbits before we took him to the vet, but they did run around each other a little but.  Our vet confirmed my suspiscions that the kitty had ear mites, and he cleaned out his ears.  However, I am concerned that it may have been transmitted to the bunnies and was wondering if this is possible?  If it is, how can I stop it before it has a chance to get worse? Also, should I worry about the cats mites coming back or him possibly being reinfected if the bunnies have the mites.  Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Answer
Dear Lindsey,

Most parasites, including mites, are fairly host specific, so it's not a guarantee that the mites from the kitten will take up residence on the rabbits.  The most common ear mite that kittens and puppies get is Otodectes cynotis.  Rabbit ear mites are Psoroptes cuniculi, and entirely different genus and species, and fairly pretty specific to rabbits.  I really don't know if Otodectes will infect a rabbit.

If you're concerned, please ask the vet about getting some Revolution for your rabbits.  This will safely kill off all types of mites and roundworm parasites in your bunnies for about 30 days, and it's painless and topical.  You can read more here:

DO NOT use Frontline, which can be deadly to rabbits!

Mites are usually not a problem in a healthy environment.  Even if an animal has a few, the immune system tends to keep them in check.  It's a good idea to be vigilant for problem signs, such as excessive scratching and shaking of the head, but absent that, I wouldn't worry too much about recurrence.

Hope that helps.  Please write back if you have more questions.
