Rabbit Repellent Spray

Question
Hi,

My wife wrote a couple of days ago concerning our new little house companion, Granite, a Mini-Rex.  We received such a great, timely answer from you that you were the first ones we thought of when we had this newest question.

We are absolutely infatuated with Granite but he has taken a liking to some of our house plants.  They are in the larger 10L pots and are tree- and shrub-type plants that need to be on the floor.  We have seen different sites mention using some sprays as boundary markers for rabbits to keep them away from items they are persistently interested in.  We are concerned for our plants, but more so for Granite.  We do not know if these particular plants will be harmful to him or not so we want to be safe.

Do you have any suggestions for sprays or essential oils that we can use as deterrents on the pots to discourage him from thinking of them as big salad bars?

Thank you!

Answer
First of all, here is a link to a list of plants that are poisonous to bunnies, so you can see if this is going to be an issue - http://homepage.mac.com/mattocks/morfz/rabhaz.html#toxplants

If you have any of these, you will need to put them where he can never reach them.

I have yet to run into a spray that will keep rabbits away from greens.  There are some sprays made for wild rabbits to keep them out of gardens, but I don't know if anyone has tried that on a domesticated rabbit.  You would unfortunately find these on the Internet searching for pest repellant.  And they are designed for outdoors use and don't really smell good.

You might try putting a pen or other barricade around them, so he can't get to them.  That's going to be the most effective deterrant for him.
