Question
I just bought this rabbit a week ago and she was doing fine until this tuesday. I took her too the vet and he said that she might be having seizures. but he doenst have any real experience with rabbits. she rolls over or even sometimes flops over on her side and her legs come up to her chest and her eyes roll to the back of her head. We have called some people who own rabbits and they say its not normal. She is eating fine and pooping fine too. i feed her some lettuice carrotsns alfalfa and pellets. What is really going on with my rabbit. I dont really kno what a seizure looks like, could you explain it too me. How can i make her better. she also shakes, is that normal or is she just still scared about her new home?

Answer
That sounds like she is having a seizure.  The question is, what is causing it?  Is she epileptic, does she have a brain disorder, and it sounds like your vet doesn't have much experience with rabbits.

You can find information on seizures at http://homepage.mac.com/mattocks/morfz/rabrefs.html#seizures

You can also find a list of recommended vets at http://homepage.mac.com/mattocks/morfz/PB_vets.html  Perhaps your vet could consult with another vet about how to diagnose and treat your rabbit.

The diet doesn't sound like an issue.

When I had a rabbit with seizures, she would push off with her front feet til her ears were almost touching her back, and she would make chewing motions with her mouth but the rest of her would be rigid.  Afterwards, she was out of it for about half an hour or so.

Does she shake when she breathes, or more like shivering?  If shivering, she could be scared yet, she just needs time to get used to your house.

Good luck, and I hope you are able to find out what her health issue is.
