Rabbit bleeding tumour (hematoma)

Question
I recently asked a question of Dr.Meyer and I had some other information to add.
My twelve year old male rabbit incurred a fractured heel in June o6 and never quite recovered. He developed a bleeding tumour which looked like an open wound so the rabbit vet prescribed metacm and baytril.  After about a two week period  of treatment I returned to the vet and found the growth to be larger. At this point he continued with the antibiotic treatment.
Upon returning to the vet last night, I found the growth to be even bigger and his nail beds filled with fluid. (edema) Anew bandage was applied more loosely and the vet said i might be considering euthanasia at this time. He has metacam now which I can give if I feel he is in pain. The vet mentioned cancer but not conclusively.
My rabbit is still eating and resides under my bed. He has never been confined to a cage.
I guess I'm grappling with putting him down. When is the right time? I even consulted a holistic vet for advice but they do not deal with rabbits. I want him to be as comfortable as possible but I haven"t felt that it is "his time" yet.Can you advise, please.  Thank you. Debrah

Answer
I guess the question at this time is how to proceed.  Might it be better to amputate the leg, if the tumor hasn't spread, than put your rabbit down?  Is that something your vet is willing to do and that you are willing to assist the rabbit in recovering from?

Generally in this situation I take my cue off the rabbit.  If he seems interested in life, is eating food, and in general seems normal then I treat them as necessary.  Pain medications are an important part of this.

If your rabbit stops eating, or just hides in a corner and no longer looks interested in life even with supportive care and pain meds, then it would be time.

There is lots of information on dealing with the loss of your bunny at http://homepage.mac.com/mattocks/morfz/rabcare.html#grief but only you can know when it is time.

If it is cancer, there are some treatments suggested at http://homepage.mac.com/mattocks/morfz/rabrefs.html#cancer
