Question
Hi. Is there a way to tell a bunny and a rabbit apart? Because I need to know if I can still feed my pet alfalfa.

Answer
Hi Vanessa,

bunny and rabbit mean the same thing.  Neither term tells you anything about the age of the rabbit you are referring to.  People call their 10 year old rabbit their bunny.  Or their 3 week old newborns baby rabbits.

The question you are asking is how do you tell the age of a rabbit?

First, do you know anything of how old your rabbit was before you got her?  Did they classify her as being in a certain age group or category?

How long have you had her?

A good rabbit vet may be able to determine a general age for her.  All you really need to know is if she is older than a year or not.  If she is older than a year (ie a fully grown adult), then you should not give her alfalfa hay.  If she under a year, you can still give her some, but you will want to taper it off the closer she gets to 1 year old.

If you need help finding a good rabbit vet in your area, go to:

to find a House Rabbit Society-recommended vet.
