Question
Dear Mr. Meyer,

his ears have a little bit of ear canker but it's very deep down in his ears!

1. he doesn't have worms in the ears, no.
can i give him mineral oil for ear canker? i heard that works? what do you think? is it safe if i put mineral oil where the canker is which is very very deep down his ears?

2. and i have a separate question about his worms that i found in his stool. he was given Ivermec on August 21st when I noticed he had worms. does he need another dose of Ivermec so that the worms don't appear again? if so, when?

thank you so much

Ana

Answer
Hi Ana,

mineral oil is one way to treat an ear canker caused by ear mites.  I do not know if it will help if the cause of the sore is another source.  Here is what I found:

Ear Canker or Ear Mange
A mite chews the skin on the side of the ear, causing irritation, redness and soreness. A whitish to tan crusty material develops in the ear. Treatment consists of swabbing the ears (inside and out) as well as the head and neck area with mineral oil or ear mite medication.

As for your ivermectin question, it is probably a good idea to give her another treatment of ivermectin, to make sure the worms are taken care of.  It is common that 2-3 treatments, depending on the parasite, are needed as not every stage of the parasite may be destroyed (some may survive).  Give her only a safe dose that she was given before.  Ivermectin can kill a rabbit if it is given too much.  They are very sensitive to medicines and when you are dealing with small animals a little medicine can go a long way, too much can kill.
