Question
Hi.I got a "female" rabbit Kurly, about 2 monthes ago for my other rabbit Peanut, and they've been getting along fine. But a week ago, the "female" rabbit Kurly has been mounting Peanut. We're not sure if Peanut is a girl or boy. Do girl rabbits mount boy rabbits? Or do girl rabbits mount girl rabbits? Is Kurly a boy or girl?

P.S
The pet shop that I bought Kurly from said that "it" was a girl, but I was told from you that "it" was a boy because "it" would spray pee.

Answer
Hi Vanessa,

the only 100% reliable way to sex a rabbit for you at this stage is to take them to a vet.  They can show you how to do it and explain to you any questions as to what to look for as telltale signs and you can be 100% sure you are not making a mistake.

Intact girls do mark, but they can't spray (mostly down) the same way an intact male can.  He will be able to spray something a lot differently and be able to hit things not just down.  Males tend to mark their mates by running by and spraying them while running past.  Girls don't normally do this.

As for mounting, girls do mount boys.  Boys will mount boys, and girls will mount girls.  For rabbits its not a sexual thing as it is a show of dominance.  The mounting rabbit is the one trying to exert its dominance over the other rabbit.  With two or more rabbits, there always is a question of dominance that must be settled before things calm down and they can be friends.

My suggestion to you is to take them both into your vet for their first annual wellness exam, ask the mto sex them for you, and discuss getting them fixed.  You shouldn't have them together intact or they will eventually have babies.  teh best thing to do is get them fixed and wait a month after the last one has its operation, then go through bonding them together as a pair.
