mixing dwarf with full size rabbits

Question
We have fallen in love with the cutest dwarf lop eared bunny, it is a 6 week old female which I have not yet agreed to adopt (but would like to!)

We have two 9 week old standard sized lop eared male brother bunnies, can the two breeds mix?

What happens if the two breed?

If we get the males desexed after fathering a litter, is there a good chance the three will live happily together?

I appreciate your advice greatly.

Kindest Regards,
Lisa

Answer
Firstly, I would advise against breeding the rabbits, period. There are already a lot of crossbred rabbits that are in need of homes. Also, without knowing a full history on the rabbits' ancestors, you do not know if they are carrying any genetic problems that could show up in the babies. Things like bad teeth (which have to be trimmed for the rabbit's entire life), seizures, and more can be passed down. You might not even know the parents are hiding the genes for such things, as most genes like this do not have to show up in the parents for it to show up in the babies.

Otherwise, I would definitely not advise crossing them because it can result in a very difficult birth (and even death of the mother and/or babies) for the female. Rather than crossing them, if you really want the little girl, get her, but keep her in a seperate cage until you can get all of them spayed/neutered. If you keep them near each other, they will likely be used to each other enough to live peacefully together after they are spayed/neutered. Since males can be neutered younger than females can be spayed, you can even get the two males neutered, then have them live with the female until she is old enough to be spayed. Then, just take them out while she heals from her surgery. AFter that, they can live together again.
