Bunny with Bleeding Paws

Question
We have a 9 month old mini Rex.  We have noticed three times now that his front paw has a wound which is bleeding.  It started with one paw only and now both paws have the same type of wound.

Is the bunny chewing his paws?  If so, how can we stop it.

Sometimes, he repeatedly taps his front paw on the ground.  We are not sure if this could also be the cause.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Answer
Hi,

mini-rexes have short fur on their paws that is prone to irritation and friction issues.  They often can develop a sore area because it first is rubbed bare just by normal use.  The bare area winds up getting irritated and the skin cracks.  If he is overweight (and rexes gain weight easier than other breeds) extra weight on his legs can allow this to occur more easily.

You need to make sure he is able to rest and sit on soft cage flooring such as real/synthetic wool, or medical bedding from Palace Pet Bedding.  You can cut these to size and keep several around to swap out flooring that needs cleaning.

I doubt this is self-mutilation as this normally manifests itself by hair-pulling/bald spots.

I would also get him to a vet to examine the sores and confirm the nature as to why they are occurring.  He may prescribe an antibiotic to make sure they do not get infected.  I would ask him if he is overweight, and if so, discuss diet changes with him.  Up his hay, cut out all treats and reduce vegetables.

You can try to apply styptic gel or styptic powder if the areas are still bleeding.

Write back anytime.
