Rabbits and Gunia Pigs

Question
My rabbit is about six years old and I have a two year old Guniea Pig. I was wondering if it was possible that they could have babies. If so how? Also, what would they look like?

Answer
Hi Tricia,

good questions.  First, rabbits and guinea pigs DNA are not compatible and they cannot have offspring together.  So your first question is a "no."

If you are considering putting them together in the same cage, I would probably recommend not doing it.  More for the safety of the guinea pig.  Rabbits can overwhelm guinea pigs because they will still mount them (as a dominance thing, not a sexual thing) and they can get hurt and very stressed out by this.  Further if a rabbit is spooked and accidentally jumps onto them or kicks them, the rabbit could kill the guinea pig.

So while possibly having them together outside of their cages in a supervised (by you) play area for a short amount of time, I would not house them in the same cages together.
