how long should birthing take?

Question
Our female rabbit starting giving birth to it's first litter yesterday, she is about 11 month old.  She had 1 baby that seems to be healthy, the second baby didn't arrive until a couple of hours after the first but it too appears to be alright.  We left the mom and babies alone over night and when we checked in the morning, there were no new babies and everyone eemed fine. A little later before leaving for work we checked again and there was a 3rd baby but it was already dead.  I'm not sure on the breed of our rabbit but she seems small and may be a dwarf.  My question is is it normal for babies to be born so far apart (I assume any more will also be still born) but more importantly is the mom in any sort of danger.  She seemed fine when we left but she will be home alone all day and I'm worried about her.

Answer
Hi Maureen,

it seems a little strange that the third one took so long, but with a dwarf rabbit, they aren't the largest animals and it could be difficult to physically get them all of her very quickly.  But obviously the third one had a problem.

I would probably as a precaution for the mom, take her to your reliable, experienced rabbit vet for a xray to make sure there isn't a stillborn kit(s) left in her, as this would eventually kill her.  It will give you peace of mind by either finding a problem that must be taken care of to save her, or there will be nothing and you'll know she's in the clear.
