dandruff?

Question
Hi Lee,

I've got two 7-8 week old netherland dwarf type bunnies. I notice that often as i scratch the grayish male on his head, a small amount of what i would consider as dandruff surfaces. (just like when humans scratch their heads)I do not think it's mites or anything contagious coz the other female black bunny, doesn't have the same problem. Is it just dandruff or something I need to worry about. Also, any way of reducing it?
Thank You

Answer
Hi,

to be honest, rabbits should not have dandruff.  If your climate is very dry, I would run a humidifier to make the air more moist.

Good nutrition should help any skin problem.  If he has any bare patches around these areas this indicates a potentially bigger problem than jsut dandruff.

If it were my rabbits, I'd take them to a good rabbit vet to get them checked out and get my vet familiar with them while they are in 'good' health.  If you need to find a good rabbit vet near you, go to:

www.rabbit.org/care/vets/html

and find a House Rabbit Society recommended rabbit vet in your area.
