my lop ear

Question
About 6 months ago I adopted a large lop ear from the Humane Society. Recently he has become extremely affectionate, to the point the he hops onto my bed at night and won't leave side during the day (hopping alongside my feet) Is this a common trait for a rabbit? He seems more like a puppy. Also, I was told that he is a male and about 4 years old, however they weren't 100% sure. How can I tell the sex of the rabbit, because I would like to get a second rabbit. I seem to think maybe he is a she because there is no spraying of urine, but I'm really unsure.

Answer
Dear Heather,

Yes, rabbits can be as affectionate as a dog or cat, and when they bond to a human it can be incredibly endearing, as you can see.

This site may help with sexing:

www.bio.miami.edu/hare/sexing.html

But if the bunny is intact, then don't get another one until the bun is spayed/neutered *and* you get another bunny ONLY by letting your present bunny choose his/her own pal--or there will be bloodshed.  Rabbits are extremely territorial and can be very jealous.  If you bring home a "surprise" rabbit, the results could be catastrophic.

I would recommend that you contact your local rabbit rescue group here:

www.bio.miami.edu/hare/chapters

to find a good rabbit vet:

www.rabbit.org/vets

and make sure all things are done carefully so that you don't strain or break the beautiful bond you have with your rabbit companion.

I hope this helps!
