Question
I have a 6 mo. male mini lop we just got in August.  He is our second lop, our
other passed last March.  He was 6.  We have always kept our bunny in a very
nice large homemade hutch.  It has a large open area that has a wire bottom
and a sitting board, food, water, etc.  Then it also has a side separate room
that we fill with hay for the bunny to sleep in, stay warm or have alone time.
The problem is, he keeps peeing and pooping in there.  Actually he does also
go in the open area too.  But that is what we want.  How can I get him to stop
going in his bedroom?  Out last bunny did not do that.  He had a corner he
preferred to use in the open area.  I am so worried he will get sick from his
urine.  It is also a pain to clean out .  There are no open wire for the water to
drain out.  For now I have blocked off the door so he cannot use it.  But it is
getting cold, and I feel guilty.  We really cleaned out the hutch after our other
bunny and even repainted it 3 months before we got this bunny, so there is
no way he can detect our other rabbit's scent.   I have thought about only
letting him in it for the night.  Please help!!!

Answer
Hi Dayna,
I would give it time, let him have access to the hutch, even though he urinates in there,he'll get the idea once the cold weather sets in.  He'll need that area to stay dry,and I'm sure he won't want to go "pee" where he stays warm.  I had this problem and to fix it,I put a larger litterbox on the cage floor where I wanted them to go.  eventually they just used the litterbox as their toilette!
 Good luck,Elizabeth
