Do mothers clean the kts poopy butts?

Question
Today the 2 black kits had googy poop stuck to their long fur around their butts.  I pulled off most of it.  Later when I checked their butts was a bit cleaner.  Don't know if they ate or cleaned themselves or if they had help from the mother.

Answer
Hi Tom,

Mother rabbits usually won't groom their kits.  They usually will not do anything but feed them.  So most likely the kits either ate it themselves or one of the other kits ate it.  And it was probably cecals which is normal for them to eat, wasn't sure if you knew that.  Rabbits have cecal droppings once a day that they eat right from their butts that helps put the normal flora back into their systems.  Sometimes rabbits will eat other rabbits cecals also and it wont hurt them but again the mother usually wont so it was probably just the baby or another kit.

Hope that helped you any more questions please let me know.

Thanks
Pam
