QuestionI have recently decided to raise meat rabbits as an alternative organic meat. I raised rabbits as a kid in 4-H, so I'm familiar with housing, care and breeding essentials. I am, however, having trouble determining which breed(s) would be most appropriate. I want to get the most meat for the money, but a 15-20 pounder seems excessive for a small family. I've also considered processing the pelts, but that may be more of a hassel than it's worth. What are your suggestions for good meat rabbits with reasonable litter size? Is there a good meat/fur combination?
Thanks
Lauren
AnswerVery good decision Lauren !
I assume you are in the US ? I would suggest you get New Zealand Does with a California Buck. That way you will have the benefit of a F1 Hybrid. When you select look for animals with shiny coat, clear eyes, meaty back, hips and shoulders. When the kits weight in at 2 kilos they are ready for processing. Here we like ours a bit meatier so I let them go to 3 kilos. My animals are special for meat and give me the 2 kilos at 50 days. I sell breeding stock but I am in Mexico. :-)
