has my lop eared rabbit got an ear infection?

Question
my 6 month old lop eared rabbit has recently developed a yellowly mark in one of his eyes, could this be dangerous? how do you treat this?

Answer
Dear Amy,

Without seeing exactly what you're describing, I cannot know for sure what this is.  If it is a shallow, plaque-like deposit, it could be a cholesteotoma, or cholesterol deposit on the eye.  This is not dangerous, but it may impinge on the bunny's vision.

But since I cannot see the lesion, do not assume my guess is correct!  This could be a corneal injury or an abscess that should be seen, diagnosed and treated by a good rabbit vet:

or even by a good veterinary ophthalmologist, if the regular vet isn't up to treating a complex eye problem.  Please don't try to treat this yourself or guess about treatments you can do at home.  Your bunny's vision and eye health may depend on your doing the right thing and getting him to a good vet for proper treatment.

I hope this helps.
