Question
My sister Dori's rabbit Thumper may have seizures and she was wondering if there was anything that she can do to prevent future seizures?

Answer
Hi Jennie

First I wanted to let you know that the expert to whom you asked this question is no longer a volunteer.  All of the questions were placed in a pool so I really have no idea how long it has been, at any rate I am sorry for the delay.

Seizures can be caused from a low blood glucose, toxic substances (eating a toxic plant), it can be a brain tumor, stress, trauma, fungal infection, a virus, the possibilities are endless....

You should seek veterinary care anytime an animal has a seizure for the first time to find out what is causing the seizure activity. For animals with known seizure conditions, they should be seen if the seizures are frequent (cluster seizures), if they increase in severity or if they are in a sustained seizure (status epilepticus).

There is no true cure for a condition that is genetically encoded in the rabbit's makeup. We can offer support. Since over all seizures are uncommon in rabbits, it can be difficult to find extensive information on treatment or a Veterinarian who has the knowledge to help a rabbit owner deal with this problem.

If you find yourself with any pet who has seizures there are some things the owner can so. Control of the environment can be important as often bright light and over handling will induce a seizure. Seizures can be triggered by external stimulation and toxic substances as well.

If you find yourself confronted by a rabbit who is having a seizure, often simply placing the rabbit in a SMALL cage enclosure that is dark, cool and quiet is all that is needed. Remember it is always wise to contact your veterinarian for support and information.

The above is the info I obtained from one of my research materials from work.  I can't guarantee the outcome as I stated before.  A rabbit friendly vet is your best option.

Thank you

Pam
