My rabbits wont mate...??

Question
Hi,
I've got a few rabbits but only two of them are currently old enough to mate. I've left them alone in the cage together but the buck does nothing. The buck will mount all the other young does I have but will not attempt to mount the mature doe. This mature doe, however, is aggressive. When they were first introduced, she mounted him. I'm wondering if her display of dominance over him is what is causing his lack of interest. Other than that, they get along just fine. What is the problem? How do I fix it?

Answer
If she is acting aggressive, that could definitely be the problem, especially if he is inexperienced. Many young bucks don't figure things out right away. They are sexually mature at 4 to 6 months, but that does not always mean they know exactly what to do by that time. Try using him on a calm doe that is ready to mate (check the vulva for a bright red or pink colour; light pink means not ready to mate, purple-red means past ready though will probably still mate; just less chance of pregnancy).

Do not house them in the same cage. Keep them in seperate cages except during mating. Always bring the female to the male's cage. It will help keep her from being territorial, and he will feel more comfortable in his own territory.
