Question
Last summer I purchased two bunnies at my local pet store that I was told may have come from the same litter and were both females. Yesterday I went outside to feed my two rabbits and I noticed hair in one rabbit's mouth and she was making a funny noise that almost sounded like a "honk." I tried to pet her to see what what was wrong and she made the noise and backed away. I fed her and her "sister" and she ate so I felt better about it. Today I went out there and one rabbit was "mounting" the other. Also, I noticed a nest in a wooden box that I had made for them to sleep in. I then discovered that one was not in fact her sister, but her brother. I am so confused and worried and I don't know if I should separate them now or what!? Could she already be pregnant with a first litter and that is why she made a nest? Also, do rabbits go into heat or can they always get pregnant? What are the risks of "breeding" brother and sister?

Answer
hi casey-first remove the buck -it maybe a phantom pregnancy these are quite common but it could well be she is about to give birth especially if she is pulling hair out.
rabbits can get pregnant at any time and breeding brother to sister sometimes means you get rabbits that are not very fiendly.i dont advise breeding sister to brother its all about genetics.
