Question
My husband rescued a bunny that was a " mean boy bunny set FREE". Well 3 weeks later we had baby bunnies. We tried to place them all but ended up with mom and 2 "babies" The babies are now 4 months old ...........mom is ripping out hair and building nest. PLEASE  PLEASE tell me she is not pregnant. I have appointment for next month for spay, All I have read is 6 months before they can breed, one doctor would not even spay til after 1 year!

Answer
Oh no Stephanie I surely hope not.  Rabbits can breed at 4 months.  Usually smaller breeds but any rabbit can develop faster than others.  They aren't supposed to be bred before 6 months because its very very dangerous for them, that might have been what you were reading.  We have had doe's as young as 3 months old end up in the shelter that were pregnant.

She could be having a false pregnancy where she thinks she is pregnant but isn't.  I really hope that is the case but I just can't tell you she isn't pregnant because she probably is.  I am so so sorry to have to tell you that.

You obviously love animals and bless your heart for saving that rabbit that was set free.  People are so foolish thinking that domestic bunnies can survive in the wild.  I would rather take them to a shelter than have them eaten by coyotes.  At least at a shelter they have a chance of being adopted.

If you do end up with babies try to find a no-kill or low kill shelter in your area.  There are House Rabbit Societies all over the country.  I don't really know how to locate them but I have had other people ask me questions and they were able to find homes for deserted bunnies through the HRS.  There are a few other experts that work directly with the HRS and have access to the contact information.  I know Mr. Lee Meyer is one for sure and he has been very helpful getting people contact information for local HRS.

I really hope you don't end up with more babies but if you do there are other experts that have HRS listed in their profile.  If you send them a message and keep it private and tell them your location they have access to the local numbers.  I would just keep it private so that you don't let the whole world know where you live.

I wish you luck and am really happy you found another vet.  1 year is just ridiculous.

Good luck to you

Pam
