Cyst

QUESTION: Hi my rabbit has a cyst on the outside of his skin which is the size of a pea.  i took him the vet Saturday and they want to do surgery.  The surgery will cost $450.00 which is very expensive for me.  Can you suggest any other ways of removing the cyst.  The cyst is not giving him any pain from what i can see.  Thank you
ANSWER: Raven, first off I am not a vet.  That said I think charging $450 dollars to remove a cyst is outrageous !!

Where exactly is the cyst ?  when you touch it it is hard or soft ?  Does it feel anchored or is it loose under the skin ?  Is it growing quickly ? Or has it grown over a long time ?  Once you answer these questions for me I can better advise you.

Raven, you will kill the bunny giving him oral meds for a cyst.  1) they do not work ( they do not work on humans much less on rabbits )and 2 ) rabbits are very sensitive to all meds - there are relativly few that can be used on rabbits without killing them.  I do not know who told you that but plesae, if you love your bunny, do not heed them. The only way to safely remove a cyst is to cut it out.  You are much better off just leaving it there.
