spay older rabbit?

Question
Hi Dana,
In september I got a Rex-doe that had been used for breeding. She is a bit over 3 years, almost 4 kilo's in weight. She's lovely and cheerful but not very good with handling. She stresses easely. She is healthy, eats like a horse and is living with a neutered Rex-male.
My question: do you think I should have her spayed? I know about the risks for uterine cancer, but her age is a factor too. Plus the fact that the handling pre and post operation, might stress her out a lot.
What do you think?
Thanks in advance, Els from The Netherlands

Answer
Dear Els,

At the age of three, this bunny is not old, and--depending on her overall health--should not be an unreasonable surgical risk for a spay. Since the risk of uterine cancer is high, I would certainly consider spaying her.  We have spayed rabbits much older than this many times without problems.

If you are concerned about her health, then please ask the vet to do bloodwork in advance, and a thorough wellness checkup.  No surgery is 100% risk-free, but with an experienced vet and all the proper precautions, there is no reason to think she should not do quite well, and have a much better prognosis for a happy, healthy life in the future with her bonded mate.

I hope this helps!

Dana
