Broken bunny toe!

Question
I was just holding my bunny tonight and got to checking out his toenails and saw one of his toes on his front foot isn't curled under like the rest. I think he somehow broke it...but I have no idea when or how. He has been acting completely normal so he doesn't seem to be in pain. Is this something I should take him to the vet for or will it just heal on its own? I will definately take him if he needs to be, but it doesn't seem to bother him and I would rather not spend the money if it's something that will heal itself. Thanks in advance for your help!

Answer
Dear Ashley,

We've had this happen, too:  a bunny will be completely normal, and we suddenly discover a dislocated or broken toe!  Usually by the time we find it, it's healed and not settable.

It's hard for me to say whether the toe will heal on its own.  If there is any swelling or tenderness, then I would get him to a good vet to be sure there's no infection or anything else that needs to be treated.

If the toe is fixed in position, it's likely that it might already have healed, especially if you can move it around without any objection from the bunny.  In that case, there's probably nothing a vet could/should do to fix it, if it's not bothering the bunny.

If you are worried, you can find a good rabbit vet to have a look here:

I hope this helps.

Take care,
Dana
